Laura was born and raised in the North side of Williamsburg, now Brooklyn, New York. According to oral history in the family, she worked as a seamstress for her aunt Elizabeth (Vyse) Cooley Ross in Manhattan. When Donald Dunnet came to New York from Scotland, directories show he rented rooms with the Vyse family, and this is how they met. They were members of the Throop Avenue Presbyterian Church in what became the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood, then moved to a house they built in Canarsie. Laura moved with her daughter Molly's family and daughter Tine to Rockville Centre in the 1920s, where she died. She is interred in the "Cypress Hills Abbey" mausoleum at Cypress Hills Cemetery.
