There is no municipal birth record for Charity, but a 1760 deed refer to her as "one of the daughters of Thomas Hathaway and Margret his wife, both of Berkley, deceased."(1) Charity was alive as late as 9 May 1796, when she and her husband deeded half their homestead land with the house to their son Hathaway Briggs. She was likely the woman over 45 who was enumerated in her son John's household in the 1800 US census. Hathaway sold this piece of real estate to his brother John in February 1801 (John having the other half of the homestead), and this may be not long after Charity died. John and Hathaway are enumerated next to each other in 1800, suggesting they either shared the house or John built his own next to his parents. The former is more likely. When John (Jr.) mortgaged this property to his son John, it was described as being about 40 acres, which is about the size of John and Charity's homestead farm. Also, members of the Paull family were abutters in the deed and the later mortgage.

sources for vital records: her marriage is recorded in the Berkley, MA, vital records.

1. Bristol County deed (Taunton District), John and Charity Briggs to Edward Bobbitt, 48:405.
2. Berkley, MA, vital records.
3. The Berkley vital records say 1766, but this may be erroneous. He said he was 75 in a July 1838 Revolutionary War pension file affidavit for his brother John, most likely placing his birth in 1762 (if his birth on 12 December is accurate). This is more reasonable given that he married in June of 1784, and a birth in December 1762 would have made him 21 rather than 17.
